Winter Wheat 2024: Assisting with your variety choices
Back in June, we hosted our Winter Wheat Trials Open Night at Mountfair Farm in the Scottish Borders.
To those of you who were able to attend, we hope you enjoyed the evening and our seed and agronomy teams were able to provide the expertise required to help inform your variety choices for the upcoming winter sowing season.
However, if you were unable to attend or would like a quick recap on the positives and negatives of the varieties, then it’s good news as we have uploaded videos on each of the varieties to our YouTube channel.
Led by Seed Director Laura Beaty and Seed Specialist Don Peters and with agronomic input from Agrochemical & Technical Director David Cairns and Technical Officer Rosie Hamilton, watch as the team provide a comprehensive insight into the varieties, including the popular KWS Extase and KWS Dawsum and up-and-comers LG Redwald, KWS Zealum and RGT Grouse.

SOFT GROUP 4
LG SKYSCRAPER
With its very high northern yield, it’s no surprise that LG Skyscraper is the wheat variety with the highest market share in Scotland.
RGT SAKI
RGT Saki boasts a competitive yield – similar to that of LG Skyscraper – and is particularly suitable for early drilling, performing well on all soil types.
RGT BAIRSTOW
RGT Bairstow is a versatile variety, with very good performance as both a first and second wheat and on light and heavy land.
RGT STOKES
RGT Stokes is the joint highest yielding soft wheat variety in the northern region and boasts the best Septoria tritici resistance of all Soft Group 4 wheats.
LG REDWALD
LG Redwald is the joint highest yielding soft wheat variety in the northern region with exceptional yield potential in all situations.
KWS ZEALUM
With a decent northern yield similar to LG Skyscraper, KWS Zealum is a new variety from KWS UK Ltd that has entered the Soft Group 4 market in 2023.
HARD GROUP 4
GRAHAM
A variety from Syngenta UK, Graham has been on the AHDB Recommended List since 2016. Its qualities include a high untreated yield and strong all-round disease resistance.
SY INSITOR
SY Insitor is the highest yielding variety on the AHDB Recommended List for the north region. It is a noticeably tall variety but responds well to PGR.
CHAMPION
Champion is the highest yielding variety in the UK and its northern yield is very high, although below that of other regions. It’s also the highest yielding second wheat on the Recommended List.
KWS DAWSUM
KWS Dawsum is the highest yielding variety in the northern region with a very high untreated yield. It also has an excellent all-round disease profile.
