Simpsons Malt Limited releases 2024 Sustainability Report

We are delighted to be able to share with you our 2024 Sustainability Report.

The annual report offers a background to our fifth-generation, family business and references carbon reduction efforts within our own operations (Scope 1 & 2 emissions) and the significant engagement we have had with our wider supply chain (Scope 3 emissions), with exciting updates on our low-carbon fertiliser partnerships and Energy Centre project.

But, as a Certified B Corporation – for which we’re currently undergoing reverification – sustainability for us goes beyond environmental, so you will also be able to read colleague updates, as well as how we’re continuing to positively impact the communities around our sites, and the feedback about the service we provide our malting and farming customers.

You can read the Sustainability Report by clicking HERE.

We’d encourage you to read the report in full when you get the opportunity, but some of the headlines from it include:

  • The reduction in our carbon footprint by 11% from our 2019 baseline, despite acquiring W.N. Lindsay Ltd in 2021 and integrating it into our operations.
  • Progress on the Energy Centre at our Tweed Valley Maltings, which is set to reduce company-wide Scope 1 & 2 emissions by around 55%.
  • Information on how we’re looking to tackle our Scope 3 emissions through industry-leading partnerships with two of the world’s leading fertiliser brands – Yara and OCI – on the supply of low-carbon fertilisers.
  • Our link-up with BASF Agricultural Solutions and use of its Xarvio platform to detail all on-farm management practices which, over time, will build up a comprehensive data set that will enable growers to farm more precisely, efficiently and sustainably.
  • The donation of £182,854 to charities and good causes local to our two malting sites and six grain storage sites in 2023.
  • Our certification as a Great Place to Work with a 75% positive response rate.
  • Our A- rating for Supplier Engagement on Sustainability by the CDP, which is above the global average for food and beverage processing.
  • Improved results in our Net Promoter Score (NPS) surveys across both the Simpsons Malt (68 to 87) and McCreath Simpson & Prentice (21 to 33) divisions.
  • Information on the development of our Growers Groups, with case studies on The Macallan for malting barley and Chivas Brothers for distilling wheat.
  • Details of continued investments across all of our sites.

We hope you enjoy reading the report and, if you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to get in touch with us.
