Cereal seed
At MSP, we can offer a comprehensive range of feed barley seed, working closely with the UK’s leading plant breeders to supply varieties that excel on both quality and yield.
At harvest, our grain trading team purchase feed barley and can either sell it on to customers within the animal feed industry or use within our own feed department, with the product sold either as straights or within carefully formulated feed mixtures.
Our two-row feed barley varieties
BOLTON
Bolton is one of the highest yielding two-row winter barley varieties on the AHDB Recommended List, with its yield on par with most hybrid barleys. Bolton has a high specific weight and also stiff straw, resulting in a low risk to lodging. It has decent disease resistance and yields consistently between seasons and regions.
LG DAZZLE
An addition to the feed barley market in 2022, LG Dazzle has a very good yield in the North region and boasts excellent disease resistance, in particular to rhynchosporium and brown rust. LG Dazzle also has good grain quality and a high specific weight, while it is earlier to mature than some other feed barley varieties.
LG MOUNTAIN
Approved onto the AHDB Recommended List in 2019, LG Mountain has consistently shown very high yield potential over seasons and regions in both treated and untreated trials. LG Mountain is earlier to mature and benefits from a good all round disease resistance profile, including Barley Yellow Mosaic Virus (BaYMV) resistance.
KWS ORWELL
Becoming something of a stalwart of the AHDB Recommended List having gained approval in 2016, KWS Orwell is renowned for being a consistent performer wherever it is sown. It is a very stiff two-row variety and offers a good combination of wet weather disease resistance.
KWS TARDIS
KWS Tardis is the highest yielding two-row feed barley variety on the AHDB Recommended List, with performance that rivals many six-row hybrid and conventional varieties. Thanks to its super stiff straw, it performs exceptionally well on heavy land and it also offers good disease resistance.
VALERIE
Part of the AHDB Recommended List since 2019, Valerie yields well and is an attractive variety, producing a sea of bright ears and big bold grain. Valerie shows excellent resistance to lodging, has early maturity and robust all-round disease resistance. It also has among the lowest screening losses on the Recommended List.
Our six-row feed barley varieties
SY CANYON
An addition to the AHDB Recommended List in 2022, SY Canyon is a hybrid barley variety that brings high yield performance combined with exceptional grain quality. SY Canyon is particularly strong on light land, has a good all-round disease profile and very high untreated yields.
SY KINGSBARN
SY Kingsbarn has been one of the market-leading hybrid feed barley varieties since its approval onto the AHDB Recommended List in 2019. SY Kingsbarn is easy to grow and has been proven to be a popular choice for all regions due to its combination of high yield, great grain quality and good all-round agronomics.
SY THUNDERBOLT
Approved onto the AHDB Recommended List in 2021, SY Thunderbolt is the highest yielding six-row hybrid feed barley in the UK, and joint highest yielding in the North region. This variety is especially strong on heavy land, while it offers outstanding grain quality and is early to mature, which helps to add flexibility at harvest.
FUNKY
Funky is becoming a stalwart of the AHDB Recommended List, having gained its approval in 2017. It’s a consistent performer across all regions and is one of the earliest to mature of the conventional winter barleys. With significantly stiffer straw than the six-row hybrid varieties, it is certainly an attractive option for growers to consider.
