We also operate our own winter wheat variety trials each year at Mountfair Farm near Duns in the Scottish Borders.

UKFM GROUP 2 & 3
KWS EXTASE
With an exceptionally high untreated yield and very high Septoria tritici resistance, KWS Extase is one of the most exciting varieties around at the moment.
BAMFORD
New to the AHDB Recommended List in 2024, this variety is a high yielding soft wheat for the north and has a strong Septoria tritici resistance score.
KWS SOLITAIRE
KWS Solitaire is a Group 3 soft winter wheat offering excellent yields (106% treated), robust Septoria and yellow rust resistance, OWBM protection and great versatility.
KWS FLUTE
KWS Flute is a high-yielding Group 3 winter wheat with strong disease resistance, good specific weight, early sowing suitability and flexibility for feed or distilling.
SOFT GROUP 4
LG SKYSCRAPER
LG Skyscraper remains a favourite for growers in the north, with good, bold grain quality.
RGT BAIRSTOW
RGT Bairstow is a versatile variety, with very good performance as both a first and second wheat and on light and heavy land.
RGT STOKES
RGT Stokes is a high yielding soft wheat variety in the northern region and boasts good Septoria tritici resistance.
KWS ZEALUM
With a decent northern yield similar to LG Skyscraper, KWS Zealum is a good variety from KWS UK Ltd that entered the Soft Group 4 market in 2023.
BLACKSTONE
Blackstone has excellent northern and untreated yields and offers excellent flexibility in sowing dates.
RGT HEXTON
RGT Hexton is a high-yielding Group 4 soft wheat with strong disease resistance, stiff straw, early-sowing suitability and excellent performance in feed, distilling and second-wheat positions.
SPARKLER
Sparkler is a new high yielding (treated) soft group 4 variety added to the AHDB RL list in 2026. It is a tall, high tillering variety that produces lots of straw and outstanding alcohol yield.
ISLA
Isla is a versatile high yielding soft wheat variety with excellent grain quality, bred for the northern region. It boasts strong Septoria tritici resistance and strong yellow rust resistance.
HARD GROUP 4
GRAHAM
A variety from Syngenta UK, Graham has been on the AHDB Recommended List since 2016. Its qualities include a good untreated yield and strong all-round disease resistance.
SY INSITOR
SY Insitor performs well throughout the UK and across a range of soil types. It is a noticeably tall variety but responds well to PGR.
CHAMPION
Champion is one of the higher yielding varieties within this group in the UK. It also has very high resistance to septoria tritici and high resistance to yellow rust.
KWS DAWSUM
This relatively short-strawed variety has performed well throughout the UK and across a range of rotational positions, soil types and sowing dates.
LG BEOWULF
New to the AHDB Recommended List in 2024, LG Beowulf is a relatively late maturing stiff strawed variety.
LG TYPHOON
LG Typhoon performs best in the north of the UK and its slow speed of development in the autumn makes it suited to early sowing.
LG CHALLENGER
LG Challenger is a high yielding hard group 4 variety, particularly for untreated yield. It boasts good specific weight, tall straw and good grain quality.
