Applying the correct fertiliser is vitally important towards the production of high-quality crops that meet consumer requirements.

At McCreath Simpson & Prentice (MSP), our fertiliser department offers a comprehensive service, working closely with you each step of the way to help you achieve a maximum return.

The service begins on-farm with our Farm Traders, who can formulate a recommendation based on soil analysis that will be produced at our blending plant, while we also have distribution agreements with some of the leading fertiliser brands.

Ensuring the right choice

Given the current fertiliser market situation, it is more important than ever to maximise the return from your fertiliser investment.

We regularly stress the importance of frequent and accurate soil sampling for soil pH and our team of BASIS & FACTS qualified Farm Traders can work with you to produce precision pH sampling, variable lime application recommendations and mapping, as well as nutrient and soil management plans.

From there, we can formulate a fertiliser blend or provide a product that matches your exact nutritional requirements, helping you to maximise performance and eliminate any additional fertiliser costs.

Our blending plant

In 2013, we made a significant investment in a declining weight continuous flow blender at our headquarters in Berwick-upon-Tweed, with the ability to produce up to 100,000 tonnes of fertiliser each year.

We source the best raw materials available for our blends and regularly test for hardness, dust, granulometry and size both in-house and independently at every stage to ensure we supply the best formula on the market.

We can also deliver the fertiliser to you in a variety of sizes, from 600kg bags to tonne bags or bulk buys of up to 1,000 tonnes. Whatever the volume, we are confident that we can meet your requirements.

A sustainable approach

As a Certified B Corporation, we are mindful of the impact our operations have on the environment and acknowledge that fertiliser application is a significant percentage of a farm’s overall carbon footprint.

As a result, we endeavour to ensure the fertilisers we purchase are sourced from the most efficient facilities that are using abatement technology, while we only enter supplier relationships with businesses who are committed to sustainability.

This sourcing is especially important to us as, in many cases with malting barley, we are purchasing back crops from farms we have supplied fertiliser to for our malting division Simpsons Malt.

We are trialling and testing lower carbon fertiliser products with the view to reducing the carbon footprint throughout our supply chain and, at our blending plant, we predominantly blend with Calcium Ammonium Nitrate (CAN), which has a huge range of benefits around spreading, compatibility and storage.

Benefiting the local economy

With our coastal location in Berwick-upon-Tweed, the majority of the fertiliser we source arrives by boat in bulk cargoes, which is an efficient way of transporting bulk commodities.

When each boat arrives at the Port of Berwick, the fertiliser is discharged and then transported one mile up to our headquarters, where it is either blended or bagged - or both - and then distributed to customers throughout our trading area.

As a business, we are proud to be one of the main beneficiaries and users of the Port of Berwick.

This, in turn, boosts the local economy in terms of employment, while also enabling development of the port for the future benefit of the community.
